For nearly 500 years, France has continually shaped and dominated fashion worldwide from the glamorous world of haute couture to affordable ready-to-wear lines. While French materials, designs, and designers have changed over time, they continue to influence fashion across the globe. French fashion history's influence began during the reign of King Louis XIV, the Sun King, whose appreciation for fashion and extravagance firmly developed fashion as an industry and made the country a center of the textile trade at the end of the 17th century. While trends change and new designers arise continually, France is responsible for the idea of fashion as an industry, as well as a profound influence on global trade and fashion marketing.
